Research and Practice:

Contributions related to education and advancement of Southeast Asian Americans must be original research or descriptions of effective research-based programs and practice within Southeast Asian American communities. While the focus of the journal is on Southeast Asian American refugee groups from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, research related to any Southeast Asian American group is welcome and will be considered.

Note: Research focused exclusively on or in Southeast Asian countries will not be considered, unless there is a substantial connection made with Southeast Asian Americans and communities in the United States (e.g., cross-country comparisons, research on Southeast Asian Americans returning to home countries, etc.).

Research and Practice Manuscript Formatting Requirements:

Research manuscripts should be no longer than 30 pages (excluding references and appendices), doubled spaced, 12-point font, 1 inch margins, 8½ x 11 paper. Longer submissions may be considered with editorial approval. Authors must follow the style manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) (5th edition)

Book Reviews:

Only reviews of books directly related to Southeast Asian Americans and communities will be considered. These include academic books, biographies/autobiographies, novels or other works of fiction, and children’s literature (fiction and non-fiction). Reviews should provide a summary of the book and critique of its content.

Book Review Formatting Requirements:

Reviews of academic book and other adult literature: 5 – 7 pages, doubled spaced, 12-point font, 1 inch margins, 8 ½ x 11 paper.
Reviews of Children’s Literature: 1 – 3 pages, doubled spaced, 12-point font, 1 inch margins, 8 ½ x 11 paper.
Authors must follow the style manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) (5th edition)

Creative and Literary Works:

Submissions to the Creative and Literary Works section of the journal are especially encouraged from youth and young adult Southeast American students in K-12 or college, as well as other interested community members, which focus on issues of identity and/or the Southeast Asian American experience. Submissions to this section may include poetry, descriptive essays, personal reflections, autobiographies or biographies, or other creative works.

Creative & Literary Works Formatting Requirements:

Creative and Literary works may be between 1 – 5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1 inch margins, 8 ½ x 11 paper. Longer submissions may be considered with editorial approval.

Preparing Your Manuscript:

Authors must prepare their manuscripts following the guidelines outlined above. Authors must also submit a title page with the following information for each author and co-authors:

· Full name
· Affiliation (e.g., school, university, or organization/agency)
· Mailing address
· E-mail address
· Telephone number
· Fax number

In addition, submissions to the Research and Practice section must include an abstract.

Submitting Your Manuscript:

Manuscripts may be submitted to the Editors by either of these methods:

A. E-Mail Attachment.

1) Please attach your manuscript to an e-mail addressed to the editors at: jsaaea@lists.sis.utsa.edu.
2) In the body of your e-mail, specify if your manuscript is a submission to the Research and Practice, Creative and Literary Works, or Book Review section, and provide full contact information for yourself and all co-authors.

B. Through the journal website at: JSAAEA. Submitting your manuscript by this method offers the advantage of enabling you to check the progress of your manuscript through the editing process at any time.

1) Visit our homepage at the link above.
2) Click ‘Register’.
3) Enter a username and password. Enter your first and last names. Enter an e-mail address where you wish responses to your manuscript to be sent. At the bottom of the information sheet, click to register as ‘Author’. The default setting will also register you as a reader. Deselect this box if you do not wish to receive e-mail notification upon publication of a new issue of the journal. All other fields on this page are optional. Click ‘Register’ at the bottom of the page.
4) You should now be at the ‘User Home’ page. From here, click ‘Author’.
5) You will now enter the ‘Active Submissions’ page, where you may monitor the progress of current submissions, or click ‘step one of the submission process’ to upload a new submission.

With either method, the preferred format for electronic file submissions is Microsoft Word. Authors who work with other word processing programs should submit their materials in RTF, or “rich text format.” When using RTF, be aware that it may not support all of the formatting instructions found in a full featured, word processing program. It is important that charts, tables, drawings, etc. be submitted in one of the standard graphics formats. Statistical graphs and charts are best in Microsoft Excel format. Submit all graphics, including Excel graphs, using a separate file for each and annotate the entry point in the text accordingly, e.g., “Insert Table 3 here.”
If your manuscript requires any kind of specialized characters (i.e., languages in scripts other than the Romanized alphabet, diacritical marks, or specialized symbols), please send a copy of the fonts used to create these characters.

Subscription Information:

All issues of the journal will be freely available on-line. If you would like to be receive periodic announcements from the journal regarding new articles published and calls for papers for special issues, please send an e-mail to James Knaack, editorial assistant, at JamesKnaack@yahoo.com and ask to be added to the JSAAEA announcement list.
